Initially known as “the talking cure”, psychotherapy has developed a great deal since Dr. Freud began to systematize his technique of psychoanalysis. Today, there are many forms of psychotherapy; ranging from traditional psychoanalysis to cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, counseling and group psychotherapy.
The clinicians at Port Jefferson Psychological & Vocational, P.C. have many years of training and experience in the various methods of psychotherapy. Treatment plans are matched to the presenting problem and may be of short or long duration. The treatment may be of an “uncovering” or “exploratory” nature, or of a brief “ego supportive” variety. Each patient’s problem as well as their strengths and weaknesses are considered before prescribing one particular form of psychotherapy. Treatment plans are developed with each patient and the relationship is cooperative. Goals and objectives are developed together and all treatment decisions are fully discussed and agreed upon.
